FOR THE DEAD PART ONE:

DANIEL MORCOMBE

The first time I saw the missing person posters for 14 year old Daniel Morcombe was in Toowong Brisbane in early 2004. My parents had moved to Tasmania and I had moved to Toowong, previously I was at Auchenflower.

When I saw the photo of Daniel holding a glass of milk, I remembered one night in 2001 when a male acquintance, whom I will call A., visited me at my flat in Auchenflower and took me for a long drive in his car- I don't know where to. What I remembered, or thought I remembered, is a boy in the back seat of A.'s car who looked like Daniel. That night A. took me to a house he was living at and there were other young people there of both sexes. So in 2004 I stood there looking at this missing person photo of 14 year old Daniel Morcombe and tried to remember that night from three years previous. Could it have been the same boy? He would only have been 11 years old then, the details of that night in 2001 were blurry in my memory. And I had not seen A. for three years. But there was something there, some memory, impossible as it was.

And then when I saw the bus with the sketch artist's impression of Daniel Morcombe's abductor on it parked behind Toowong Villiage shopping centre I remembered the first time I visited A. at his share house at Southport, Gold Coast. I was 14 and I lied to my mother to visit A., who was over 30 years old. That night A. took me for a drive in his car and at some point he picked up a friend who carried a cane, giving him a lift in the back seat. The sketch artist's impression of a pointy nosed "Richard Ramirez" aka The Night Stalker as Daniel Morcombe's abductor seemed to match my memory of the man who A. called a friend and gave a ride to that night in 1996 or 1997 when I was in his car.

It was 2004 when Daniel Morcombe went missing, my memory of a man who could fit the police sketch was from at least seven years previous and the night in 2001 was a blurry memory so I did not go to the police.

But when Daniel Morcombe's abductor was named, his living situation- a caravan park- matched what A. had told me about the man who sat in the back seat of his car during the night time drive when I visited him at Southport without my parents knowledge in 1996 or 1997 when I was 13 or 14.

Did I come into contact with Brett Cohen through A. when I was Daniel Morcombe's age at the time of his murder?

More disturbing to me is the memory of meeting a boy who looked like Daniel Morcombe in A.'s car in 2001. Did it happen or was it a constructed memory, some trick of the brain?
